Huge Hilux investment in KZN
Toyota deepens South African supply chain with ninth-generation Hilux.
For 56 years, Toyota South Africa has built Hilux bakkies in its Prospecton factory, south of Durban.
As South Africa ' s best-selling vehicle, it serves a wide range of customer needs, from mining and agriculture to short-haul logistics and technical support. In its luxury-grade double cab configuration, the Hilux is a family vehicle.
All Hilux buyers have the same lofty expectations of durability and product quality. The Hilux ' s popularity is built on Toyota ' s established, well-resourced dealer network and on product build quality and engineering that hold up under demanding local conditions.
The last few generations of Hilux have contained more and more locally sourced content without compromising the bakkie ' s engineering integrity. Toyota South Africa works with its local suppliers to ensure each generation of Hilux defends the reputation built by the last. With the new ninth-generation Hilux, the country ' s most popular vehicle has seen a record investment from Toyota South Africa and more local content than in any previous Hilux.
KZN manufacturing
As a lead manufacturing employer and engineering services and component buyer in South Africa ' s most populous province, what Toyota South Africa does matters. It has spent R27 billion on local Hilux production tooling and industrial engineering content over the last 20 years.
The Toyota bakkie range is also crucial for KZN ' s economic health. Toyota ' s Prospecton assembly plant, just south of Durban, is one of the most important engineering supply chain buyers in KZN.
Toyota South Africa ' s ninth-generation Hilux project has been a R10,4 billion investment. How has Toyota South Africa spent that money? An enhanced vehicle logistics warehouse accounts for R1 billion, with a new chassis facility costing R2,2 billion. Toyota South Africa is also spending R3.8 billion on its production facilities in Prospecton.
