MAHINDRA SA GETS WORLD CLASS
PARTS DISTRIBUTION OPERATION
Mahindra South Africa, which markets Mahindra and
SsangYong vehicles locally, has shown consistent
growth in the last 10 years that it has been operating
in Southern Africa. The company has now taken its
game ahead in terms of providing world class parts
distribution to its dealer network which ultimately
benefits its thousands of customers.

“Since the start of operations in 2004, Mahindra SA
has been focusing on after sales support which is
among the best in the industry. This new warehouse
operation is a further indicator of the focus we are
placing on providing outstanding customer care,”
said Mahindra SA CEO, Ashok Thakur.
“We have taken a one-stop-solution approach
with Savino Del Bene (SDB) South Africa, one
of the world’s leading logistics specialists taking
responsibility for the entire supply chain, from
ordering to receiving, warehousing and delivery.
SDB is already doing the forwarding and clearing of
our vehicles, including exports,” added Thakur.
The new system is paperless with Mahindra and
SsangYong dealers being able to track their orders
every step of the way in real time. The operation is
already running at a first time supply rate of over 90%,
with a target of 99.7%.
The Mahindra parts operation has been relocated
to a 10,000m2 warehouse in Khulani Business Park
in Jet Park, Ekurhuleni. Mahindra and SsangYong
parts are binned in an area of 3,500m2 with space for
expansion.
SDB has a strategic alliance with InSync Solutions,
a company in the Imperial fold, which is a specialist
in all aspects of logistics management, including
extensive experience in the automotive field.
The three-month migration process was virtually
seamless which was important as it involved
maintaining a parts supply to the dealer network.
The project involved moving and re-binning more than
100,000 items. Besides using a number of different
sized bins, on the basis of ‘one part number one bin,’
the system includes two lean lift storage units which
are ideal for storing small and valuable items. Each
unit, which stands 8-metres in height, can store 3,500
small parts which can be accessed by punching in a
sequence of numbers to bring the selected tray into
position for the required part to be picked.
This latest contract brings to 22 the different
automotive brands in South Africa, which have
projects handled by SDB, with the first one dating
back 15 years. “We are very pleased with the manner
in which our move to this new parts distribution centre
is progressing and this bodes well for an ongoing
fruitful relationship between Mahindra SA and SDB as
well as its service provider InSync Solutions, which is
a further example of our ongoing focus on improving
the customer experience,” concluded Mahindra SA
CEO Ashok Thakur.
