Rev. Art Simon, pastor of
Trinity Lutheran Church
in New York York, as
founder-president.

At Bread’s urging, both houses of Congress
pass a landmark resolution on people’s right to food.

Bread won its campaigns
to create grain reserves
to meet global food
emergencies. This led to
the creation of a trust that
today holds up to 4 million
tons of food and cash to
buy more.

convinced Congress to
expand the Special
Supplemental Program for
Women, Infants and
Children. WIC now
reaches 9 million mothers,
infants, and children.
1985
Bread wins the passage of
the African Relief and Recovery Act,
providing $800 million in emergency
food aid to help African countries
cope with a severe famine.
