LIAR, LIAR, PANTS ON FIRE

Kathryn Sage, 2020

We are not free.

We are all trapped.

There are places we can’t be—

We’ll get killed, hurt, kidnapped.

Don’t walk the streets alone at night,

Be careful what you wear,

Don’t wear something super tight,

Cut off all your hair.

Be careful who you’re talking to,

They might not be what they say,

Those footsteps down the avenue,

They could be coming your way

Have some sense of apprehension

When you are walking home.

Do you feel the tension,

When you are home alone?

Stay close to your friends,

Don’t go anywhere alone,

Do you know self-defense?

Did you make sure you have your phone?

Make sure you stay silent,

Walking down the road,

Or it could become violent,

A bomb of anguish will explode.

What if something happens?

Don’t cry! Don’t wail!

It will be like it never happened,

He won’t go to jai1.

Please don’t tell anybody,

You could ruin his life!

It would be a tragedy,

He has kids; he has a wife!

Why would he be the victim,

And we all the liars?

A liar is how you should depict him,

Our lives will be on fire!
