The Life That

Never Lived

By: Abbey Brown

The excitement they had built up inside, I could see, but why? My sister and I were brought together for something they recognized as a meeting. As my sister was only three and I only ten, these meetings weren't common, nor understood. My parents were about to flare up with all kinds of emotions. My mother had declared she was pregnant. I felt the blood surge through my veins as I kept a watchful eye on my sister. I was ultimately curious to read the emotions plastered on her face. Pure merriment. The weeks had begun to go by, then one month, then four. Suddenly something was wrong. She was sicker than usual, not used to the odd feeling. Walking upon the cold hospital floors was like performing the trapeze in a dark circus, only everyone's gone home already and they've taken the net with them, so if you fall, the hard ground was there to catch you. Nothing good comes from the doctor with a blank stare through your mother's very soul. Nothing needed to be said, nothing could be. It was the unspoken truth. No apologies were uttered for there was no one to blame. The emotions we faced were so unexpected. Disappointment, defeat, and depression. How do you say goodbye without saying hello? The life that never lived. The child without a chance.
