I wave my arms, annoyed at my incapability to do anything other than lie there. I feel hands move me and place my now wriggling body into the soft soothing arms of a young woman with big blue eyes and blonde hair. She looks terrible, large circles under her strained eyes, lips drawn tight against her fair skin. Then she smiles down at me, and as she does so, her eyes crinkle in the sweetest way that she is suddenly familiar to me, beautiful and familiar in a way I can barely describe. I stare into those fathomless eyes and see my reflection there. I am again stunned into silence at the workings of the world.

"Alice," she whispers into my ear, "Alice, my new baby girl."

Jazmin's story granted her acceptance into the 2010 New England Young Writers'

Conference (NEYWC) at Middlebury College on the Bread Loaf campus in Vermont.
