Mrs. Romer, my third-grade teacher, gave a brief description of the parts of speech: noun, verb, adjective; then asked us to list as many examples as we could for each category which she wrote in brightly colored markers, a different color for each part of speech, on large chart paper. I do remember the colors which pleased my eye.

What makes me remember this entire lesson, however, was when she had the class stand up from our seats to perform the actions of the words we had listed on the “Verbs” poster: jump, skip, walk, stand, dance… Together we

moved. The children of the class jumped. We skipped. We walked in a circle around the classroom. We stopped and stood. We danced!

How do I start paying off my debt?

With a strategy

If you are on the path to financial empowerment and have debt, it is common to feel overwhelmed and not know where to start to tackle your debt. These strategies could help.

Based on your characteristics, you should choose the strategy that works best for you, but above all, you must remain consistent.

1. Snowball method: List your debts from smallest to largest. Pay the minimum on all and focus your extra payments on the smallest one. As you pay off each debt you build motivation and momentum.

2. Avalanche method: List your debt by interest rate, from highest to lowest. Focus on the one with the highest to lowest. Focus on the one with highest rate first. This saves your more money in the long run by reducing the total interest paid.

Both strategies work. The best one is the one you can stick to. And remember creating a monthly Budget is essential to know how much you can allocate to debt while still covering your basic needs.

Debt isn't resolved with guilt, but with a plan. Step by step, you can achieve it.
