Around 250 Internal Revenue Service agents are currently detailed to Immigration Service under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between
the Department of Homeland Security secretary, and the Treasury Department secretary.
The agents have been authorized under Title 8 of the U.S. Code to make “arrests” for civil violations of immigration law, according to a government official familiar with the agreement.
The IRS has long assured undocumented workers that their tax information is confidential
and that it is safe for them to file income tax returns.
The agreement is likely to dissuade undocumented immigrants from filing taxes, leading to billions in lost revenue. Undocumented immigrants pay
an estimated $90 billion in federal, state, and local taxes.
This administration is more concerned about deporting non-criminal immigrants who work and pay taxes than their benefit to our economy.
