According to a CELAC study, more than 70 million people in Latin America and the Caribbean do not have the income to purchase a basic food basket and 43 million suffer from hunger. For its part, a recent UNICEF report maintains that 23 million Latin American children suffer from food poverty.
In Argentina, poverty reached 25 million people in the first quarter of the year, and almost 8 million live in extreme poverty or indigence. For its part, in Brazil, during the first year of Luis Inacio Lula da Silva's presidency, the number of Brazilians suffering from hunger decreased by 8 million and another 12 million people stopped suffering from food insecurity.
How is this possible in the breadbasket of the world?
