The Mercosur summit will be held on December 5 and 6 in Montevideo, Uruguay, the country that holds the pro tempore presidency of this South American bloc, in the midst of the transition of the government to the recently elected Jamandu Orsi of the Frente Amplio who will accompany the outgoing president Lacalle Pou. The economic and commercial bloc was founded with the Treaty of Asunción in 1991 to be able to trade favorably with other world blocs such as the European Union.

The presidents of the four founding countries of the bloc are invited to the meeting: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, as well as the Government of Bolivia, which formalized its incorporation as a full member in July of this year, reported the AFP agency. The agenda is centered on the trade agreement that the European Union (EU) and Mercosur are seeking to conclude.

In recent years, the South American commercial bloc has presented internal fissures due to the position of the Uruguayan president Lacalle Pou. The question mark right now is Argentine President Javier Milei, who opposes the bloc and has had strong disagreements with Brazilian President Lula da Silva.
