Mrs. Romer, my third-grade teacher, gave a brief description of the parts of speech: noun, verb, adjective; then asked us to list as many examples as we could for each category which she wrote in brightly colored markers, a different color for each part of speech, on large chart paper. I do remember the colors which pleased my eye.

What makes me remember this entire lesson, however, was when she had the class stand up from our seats to perform the actions of the words we had listed on the “Verbs” poster: jump, skip, walk, stand, dance… Together we

moved. The children of the class jumped. We skipped. We walked in a circle around the classroom. We stopped and stood. We danced!

CASTLE ISLAND

Fun Learning in Two Languages

Por / By Enrique Rob Lunski

Imagine a childhood where a student can socialize in a classroom community – and

learn academics in more than one language! It was December 2021 when Diane M Nickerson,

MS Ed, Founder and Director of Castle Island Bilingual Montessori School, in Albany, NY, wrote this in her first of many articles on Education for ABClatino magazine.

The Montessori method of education,

named after its founder Maria Montessori (1870-1952) is a non-traditional approach

to learning that focuses on fostering a

sense of independence and personal development in the classroom.

Recently I had the opportunity to be in the Capital District of New York State, and

decided to stop by Castle Island, and discovered a joyful learning environment

for children ages 3 through 13.
