Forest fires have intensified throughout the region, from the Amazon to the Andean moors. The combination of extreme droughts, the impact of climate change and extractive policies have turned vast areas into scenes of uncontrollable fire. Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Ecuador are some of the most affected countries, facing an environmental disaster that threatens ecosystems, biodiversity and communities. Is the region prepared to face the urgent challenge of stopping this environmental catastrophe?
The common denominator is the influence of agribusiness in the fires. In Bolivia, more than four million hectares were razed in the departments of Pando, Beni, Santa Cruz and La Paz. Paraguay has already consumed 70,000 hectares by fire. And, in Brazil, in a single day, 5,132 fire outbreaks were recorded. Drought accelerates the spread of fire in the region.
