Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Third-grade students at the Manitou School (https://manitouschool.org)  in Cold Spring learned about Colombian culture through the dance of cumbia.

The students, who attend the bilingual school of Manitou and have Spanish classes every day, were excited to learn the dance, and they did a fantastic job!

Students wore red and white traditional outfits as they twirled to

the sounds of drums, maracas, and gaitas, performing in front of the

entire school. They also explained to the school the blend of European, African, and Indigenous cultures that make the dance so special.

Nubia Wilchez, a bilingual educator with a master’s degree in special needs, brought

the happiness, joy, and movements of Colombian culture to the school. This experience allows students to learn

about and share the culture, as well as to explore different cultures throughout the United States.
