Culture of Violence in the US
It is a shame that in a country like this, violent acts continue to take place, claiming the lives of dozens of people and children in just 5 minutes. According to the FBI, there has been a 50% increase in active shooter incidents between 2020 and 2021. This is unacceptable! It is simply a lack of political decision to remedy it. It is not about abolishing the second amendment to the Constitution as many say to distract. Federal laws are only necessary to check the background of those who want to buy a weapon before the actual purchase and to prohibit the sale of semi-automatic weapons that are used to kill many indiscriminately; measures that the vast majority of citizens say they support. Australia is a clear example: After an indiscriminate killing of 35 people and 23 injured in 1996, the government adopted laws at the national level that made this act to never be repeated.
There are two things we can all do. One is to exercise the right to vote and to not elect politicians whose campaigns are paid for by organizations like the NRA (National Rifle Association); and the other is to pay attention to social media. In virtually all cases of massive gun violence, the perpetrator announced it in advance on their social media postings. It is our responsibility, if someone we know expresses themselves in this way, to alert health professionals and the relevant authorities.
Enough is enough!
