Cesar Chavez (1927 to 1993) was an iconic Mexican American labor organizer, civil rights activist, and folk hero who dedicated his life to improving the pay and working conditions of farm workers.  Along with Dolores Huerta, he co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA), which later merged to become the United Farm Workers (UFW)  labor union. Ideologically, his worldview combined progressive politics with Roman Catholic social teachings.
