Efficiency and Meaning

The other day with my daughter we went to the house of an 84-year-old friend whom I hold dear and for which I have great respect both for her erudition and for her frankness in speaking. While we were having lunch, we laughed and talked about different things, when the conversation turned around concepts of effectiveness in politics.

My friend told how a politician asked her what she preferred: a politician who was truthful or efficient. I mean, you prefer a good, truthful politician at heart or one who's efficient at getting things done. To which she replied that it was not a real option as both options were not necessarily exclusive.

And she continued with another question: who had been the most efficient politicians/rulers in history? After a moment of pause she claimed "Hitler, for he was very efficient in exterminating 6 million people" and then added "and Gandhi, freeing almost 900 million people and giving them a free country."...
