A Dream Behind Bars

As an English teacher working with minors from Central America at the Children’s Home of Kingston, I met many different types of students. Some had lots of educational background, others had very little. Some were engaged in my class, others struggled. Some did their homework, others did not. None of them deserved to be in jail. When I learned that ICE had arrived at the Children’s Home early in the morning on the 18th birthday of one of my students, separated him from his brother, and taken him to jail, I was infuriated. I knew that my student would not know what was happening and would have no way of contacting anyone in his family. Luckily, I was able to track him down and visit him, connect with lawyers on his behalf, and generate community support that led to his eventual release on bail after 4 months in Orange County Jail...
