Wigley, Mark:
In « Untitled : the Housing of gender », Mark Wigley investigates the
sociohistorical foundations that
determine the relation of women to
the interior of the family house in
architectural terms. He looks at the
writings of Leon Battista Alberti from
the fifteenh century, in particular
Della famiglia, a moral treatise on
marriage, education, and household management, which describes
explicitly the architectural stategies design to ensure that « men
have the freedom to travel » while
« the woman… remains locked up at
home ». Alberti write, the wife must
stay indoors away from the « public
eye » while the man should avoid
spending too much idle time inside
among the interior’s « little feminine
trifles certainly lacking a masculine
and glorious spirit ».
