Otium:
The otium, latin term covers a variety of forms and meanings in the
field of free time. This is the time
during which a person enjoys the
rest to indulge in meditation, studious leisure. This is also the time of
retirement at the end of a public or
private career, as opposed to the
active life, public life. It is a time,
sporadic or prolonged personal
leisure implications for intellectual,
virtuous or immoral with the idea
of remoteness from everyday business (negotium), and involvement in
activities highlighting the artistic or
intellectual development (eloquence,
writing, philosophy). The otium is of
particular value for businessmen,
diplomats, philosophers and poets.
