Message from the President:
F
irst and foremost, I would like to thank Steve Shanley, my predecessor as ABCD President. Steve dedicated a significant portion of his time to resolving numerous ABCD related issues, and his efforts will not soon be forgotten. I only hope to continue upon his successes; thank you, Steve.
Unfortunately, not everything in this address can be positive, as we all know the State House and Senate could not agree on a Transportation Funding Bill. This, of course, is a grave concern not only for those who work in the transportation industry, but for the public as a whole. Public and private sector engineers have both worked hard to convey to the General Assembly that improving the infrastructure of the Commonwealth, especially bridges, is a necessity for the health and welfare of the citizens of Pennsylvania. I urge everyone not to be discouraged, to continue the fight, and to express to the decision makers that failing to provide for infrastructure can have catastrophic consequences. We have exciting plans for the 2013?2014 season. Our kickoff meeting, scheduled for September 18th, will feature James Andrews, PE and James Johnson, PE of PENNDOT District 10?0. They will be discussing the state of affairs of the District 10?0 Bridge Unit. A full listing of dinner meetings for the 2013?2014 season can be found at http://abcdpittsburgh.org/homepage/events/. We are still in the planning phases of a seminar to occur during this season. The planned topic is Accelerated Bridge Construction. Once more details are finalized the information will be distributed to membership. The ABCD annual Board of Directors elections were held at the end of last season, and I would like to thank Bill Ferko (SAI), Tom Ryan (Michael Baker) and Jon McHugh (Gannett Fleming) for offering their time and experience towards enhancing the ABCD Board. As always, ABCD seeks continued input from its members. This is truly an organization of all who are involved. All members are encouraged to provide suggestions and feedback for what they believe could make the organization or events even better. Also, anyone seeking to become more involved with ABCD should contact either me or any of the Board members. Alex P. O’Neill, PE President ABCD Pittsburgh
