Summary:
The Levi‐Bird Duff Bridge (XP05‐0108) project is an 830 foot five span composite steel
plate girder bridge. It serves as a vital link between West View Borough and Bellevue
Borough and carries Cornell Avenue over I‐279. The bridge has two 12’ lanes of traffic,
4’ shoulders and a 6’ sidewalk on the west side of the bridge. The purpose of the bridge
preservation project was to repair the extensive spalling on the piers and abutments by
performing class AA cement concrete repairs and to minimize future spalling expansion
dams were replaced, anodes were added in the class AA cement concrete repairs and
downspouting was replaced with increased diameter downspouts. The bridge deck was
rehabilitated by hydrodemolition and placement of latex modified concrete and the
rusted protective fencing was replaced. The substructures and superstructure were
coated with a penetrating stain to cover the extensive discoloration caused by rust and
for protection from salt spray from I‐279. Access to the pier repairs required the
installation of a temporary construction entrance from I‐279. W.E.C. Engineers, Inc.
provided engineering and environmental services for the project. The overall design was
sensitive to aesthetics and public safety that included traffic and environmental
complexities. The project was completed within the construction schedule and project
budget.
