Project Description:
This bridge is one of 5 early action bridge replacements of bridges crossing the mainline
turnpike between the Butler Valley and Harmarville Interchanges. This work is in
preparation of the 6‐lane mainline turnpike widening between these two interchanges
(between mileposts 40‐48). These bridge replacements are necessary to move the
abutments further from turnpike centerline to accommodate the two extra lanes. The
WB‐423 Bridge carries Middle Road over the turnpike in Hampton Township. The
original bridge was a single span steel through‐girder bridge constructed in 1951, and
reconstructed in 1985. The new bridge is a single span, AASHTO type pre‐stressed
concrete I‐beam bridge. A single span was utilized because the planned mainline curve
realignment during the future widening precluded the construction of a median pier. It
has 5 lines of 7ft. deep, 134ft.‐8in. pre‐cast I beams. The deck was raised approximately
7ft. from the original, and is 44ft.‐0in. curb to curb. Both abutments are founded on
spread footings. The abutments and piers have an architectural surface treatment that
is intended to replicate random stone native to the region. It was accomplished using
plastic form liners and the surface was stained and sealed. The bridge was closed on
March 11, 2013, and the new bridge was opened to traffic on October 4, 2013
