Project Description:
This project involves the replacement of a bridge carrying S.R. 1013, Saxonburg
Boulevard over Deer Creek (A13) in Indiana Township, Allegheny County. As a
subconsultant to W.E.C. Engineers, Inc., T. W. Engineering, Inc. (TWE) was responsible
for the preliminary and final design of the roadway and bridge elements. This project
utilized A+Bx bidding in order to accelerate the construction schedule. The bridge was
closed and the detour implemented on July 8, 2013. Construction was completed on
time and the new bridge was opened to traffic on August 30, 2013.
The existing structure, constructed in 1929, was a simple span non‐composite steel
riveted thru‐girder bridge with a wood plank sidewalk on the upstream side. The
superstructure consisted of two steel riveted built‐up girders and four riveted built‐up
floor beams, with four steel rolled section stringers supporting steel buckle plate deck.
The new bridge is a single span, composite prestressed concrete spread box beam
bridge consisting of seven (7) 48” x 36” spread box beams spaced at 6’‐0” c/c and an 8”
reinforced concrete deck with ½” integral wearing surface. The bridge utilized integral
abutments supported on piles. The span length is 89’‐6”
