Project Description:
The original dating of Montour Run Bridge No. 5 is unknown. It is assumed to go back to
the mid to late 1800’s. In 1958 the superstructure was replaced with non‐composite P/S
adjacent box beams and the abutments were widened.
The bridge was structurally deficient and load posted. To bring the road and bridge up
to current specifications the geometry required superelevation, resulting in a widening
of 5’. The existing abutments were to be reused as a cost saving measure. A new P/S
composite spread box beam bridge was designed to fit on the existing abutments. New
Approach slabs with toe walls and gabions were designed in order to stay within the
existing Right of Way and bypass a geotechnical analysis. Existing deteriorated stones
on the abutments were patched and a new scour wall was put in place. Construction
occurred in the fall of 2013. The bridge was opened to traffic in December, 2013.
