WOMAN HANDLER’S AWARD
Ch. Belloaks Ginger, winner of the 1953 National Amateur Stake, was killed by a rattlesnake while hunting in Florida with Jim Bell, husband of the owner, Marcelle Bell. Beginning
in 1954, the Belloaks Ginger Memorial Trophy was offered by the Bells for the best dog handled by a woman in the National Amateur stake. Competition was keen and Lelah Welk won
three times while Ruth Lee, Marcelle Bell and Ann White twice.
The present woman handler’s award is an ABC award and was rst offered in 1966. At
least three women must participate as handlers in the Amateur Championship, or the award
will not be offered. It is awarded to the woman who does the best job of handling her dog.
The dog does not have to place in the stake, as the award is made on the merits of the person
handling the dog.
