A candidate should demonstrate initiative and have confidence in their skills and experience. The ability to undertake marketing efforts and handle a substantial caseload is very important.

2. What recommendations would you make to law students pursuing a legal career?

Law students should get as much work experience as they can along with taking the time to consider their goals and desired outcomes. If they are targeting firms which have online applications, they should apply early. It is essential for students to think about alternative routes to securing a training contract, for example working as a paralegal and making themselves indispensable to the employer – prove yourself within a firm!

By having general awareness of the current legal climate and the legal market. A candidate should know what the current threats to law firms are and how these issues can be tackled. Consider the end goal – the law firm is a business.

4. What impresses you in an interview?

A candidate that has clearly thought about what they want and are aware of the local market and market conditions, along with having an evident commercial acumen. Overall, we look for individuals who will fit into the establishment and work within a team.
