Th e joys of plunging bodily into a
river to pursue an aquatic beast can
quickly become undone for a lady of
any sensible refi nements when she
alternately considers what she gains
and loses from the experience. She
may gain a closeness to God, putting
her life at risk for the thrill of the
hunt, but she runs the risk of losing
