Music Pedagogical Research to Transform Practice
Limitations
Despite the number of merits of informal pedagogy, some
constraints were faced.
Classroom Management
It was a challenge to manage and control the class. While
I wanted to immerse them in the pedagogy, students did
not always know where to draw the boundaries. It was also
difficult to monitor the progress of the students and the
two girls. There were other more pressing matters in each
lesson to deal with, which was the management of certain
students. There were occasions where I had to discipline
students who were rowdy.
Compromising on the Finer Details of Keyboard Skills
The students gave a good performance to the best of
their ability. Most of them were able to play a recognisable
tune. However, most were not using the right keyboard
techniques to produce the songs. For instance, they were
using inappropriate fingerings for the pieces. Perhaps
given more time, they could have corrected their fingerings
when they continued to explore other songs. Further lesson
time would also have presented opportunities for teacher
facilitators to highlight such finer details to them.
