THE PROPOSAL
It was the weekend of David’s 30th birth-
day. He’d been intent on wanting a
mellow “staycation” in Chicago so I
didn’t plan anything specific. On Friday,
February 6, 2015, we left work early and
planned to grab a glass of wine at Eataly,
one of our very favorite foodie spots in
the city, but somewhere we go often.
“Are you sure you don’t want to try
something new to kick-off your big
birthday weekend?” Nope. He wanted
Eataly. So we walked over to the edible
heaven and snagged a spot at one of the
standing only tables. I wanted red, but he
insisted on Champagne and it was his
birthday … and I never say no to bubbly!
As I was waiting, I heard an acapella
group start to sing behind me and
thought, nice touch Eataly! Then I heard
the song they were signing, Bruno Mars
“Marry You.” Even though David’s really
selfless, I didn’t think he’d choose his
30th birthday to propose, so I assumed
someone else was getting proposed to at
MY favorite place! I was so annoyed. He
walked back over with 2 glasses of Cham-
pagne and I pointed out the singers. As
we watched them sing he said I love you.
“I love you too babe,” I said, still thinking
that yet ANOTHER girl was getting en-
gaged besides me. “And I want to spend
the rest of my life with you,” he said
super seriously. Then he dropped to his
knee and I couldn’t believe what was
happening – I WAS GETTING EN-
GAGED! The acapella group was for me!
Through happy tears and excited shak-
ing I managed to say YES! and pull him
up to plant a huge smooch on his sweet
lips! AND THEN … from around the
corner comes my parents and his parents
who he had invited out from California
