An UNESCO World Heritage Site, the
San Bernardino de Siena Church
(above) in Xochimilco, Mexico City, was
former monastery complex built in the
16th century over a former pre-Hispanic
temple as part of evangelization efforts
after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec
Empire in 1521. The interior of the
church contains a rare 16th-century
altarpiece in Plateresque style with no
columns or other such supports.
The Palacio de Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Arts) is a prominent cultural center in
Mexico City. Significant Aztec finds, such as a sacrificial altar in the shape of a
plumed serpent have been found here The main facade, which faces Avenida Juárez,
is made of white Italian Carrara marble. The most impacting aspect is the stage
"curtain" which is a stained glass foldable panel created out of nearly a million pieces
of iridescent colored glass, by Tiffany's in New York.
Glistening in brilliance and magnificent to behold, the Museo Soumaya in Mexico
City is a private museum owned by billionaire Carlos Slim. Dedicated to his late wife,
the museum is free for all to enjoy, providing access to view the Masters, which many
could never afford to see in person. The art collection is estimated at $700 million. d
