As the Bull finished his speech they emerged out of a dense forest of filamentous algae and into
the first morning light. The sun brought out gold flakes that stretched along the back of the old Bull. In
that moment Andy saw all the glory that had once been the pikeminnow written out along the length of
the Bull.
“NO! I can help! How can I help you? I will find a way to fight the invaders. I will knock down
the Wall. The backwaters will be restored and the homeostasis that once existed can flourish again! I
CAN HELP THE BULL'S RECOUNQUER THE COLORADO!”
And as Andy's voice died, the excitement and hope that for a moment had radiated throughout
the water died with it.
The Bull remained motionless. As stoic as ever. Then after a long pause the Bull replied. The
sadness in his voice could have been audible to a deaf person, “Boy. Did you not hear what I told you?
Once the pikeminnow thought we were invincible, but you showed us that a species is only as strong
and resilient as the world in which it depends upon. Your kind showed this truth to me boy, and now I
must show that truth to you. Your kind is killing the world you all depend upon. You are filling the air
with carbon and pulling the water from the soil. If your kind continues your fate will match the fate of
us remaining Pikeminnow. After it is too late, your scientists will attempt to recreate the world the
biosphere you now take for granted.”
“Boy. Don't doom your species the same way you have doomed the pikeminnow. There is still
time. You can take my story back to your people. Beg them to change.”
