THE BEYOND INCARCERATION PROJECT
Roslyn ( Roz ) Smith continues to lead , deepen , and represent V-Day ’ s work with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women through the Beyond Incarceration Project , Right / Write to Heal Initiative , and her blog Dispatches from Beyond Incarceration .
Roz is recognized as a leader and advocate , and she actively participates in a series of advocacy campaigns and events covering a range of topics , including the closure of Riker ’ s , restorative justice , Covid-19 , elder parole , fair bail laws , housing and more . Roz and the Beyond Incarceration Project work with partner groups including Women ’ s Justice Project , The Osborne Association ( where she serves on the Advisory Board for the Osborne Center for Justice Across Generations ), RAPP ( Releasing Aging People in Prison ), The Douglass Project , Parole Preparation Project , among others . She has spoken , given presentations and participated in events and panels at the Brooklyn Law School , Trinity School , and John Jay College , to name a few . She has also attended conferences such as the Inaugural Social Justice Convention and Beyond Bars , policy dialogues and meetings with political representatives in Albany and at the local level in New York City .
She is leading the Right / Write to Heal Initiative , V-Day ’ s joint writing project with the Columbia Center for Justice that allows women to share how they cope with the consequences of incarceration on themselves , their families and communities , with the goal of changing how people understand the impact of criminalization on women .
