In the 1980's you could USE a computer, in the 1990's you could HAVE a computer. The 1980s was when IBM PCs became popular and found homes in many white-collar offices of the United States. Microsoft pioneered the home computer in 1992 with the release of Windows 3.1. Even though Windows was not anything new by this time, 3.1 was the first commercially successful version of Windows, and gave Microsoft a big enough name for what was to come-- Windows 95. Windows 95 was very highly anticipated, Microsoft spending millions on advertising to make sure everyone knew what they were up to. Windows 95 was released on August 24, 1995, and 1995 was considered the year computers became mainstream.
Personal computers were mainly used for work.
The Internet user base of today is 50 times larger than it was in 1995
Facebook today is 15 times larger than the entire Internet was in 1995.
