Indecent is a play within a play, exploring the controversy around Sholem Asch’ s God of Vengeance – a Yiddish drama about a Jewish brothel owner whose daughter falls in love with a prostitute. Its depiction of a lesbian relationship sparked backlash in the Jewish community and led to the arrest of the Broadway cast in the 1920s after the first same-sex kiss on stage. Paula Vogel’ s Indecent examines the fight for artistic freedom and the challenges faced by artists who confront cultural taboos. It’ s a tribute to the power of storytelling and the lasting impact of art against censorship and adversity.
