Low applied for an internship at the Mexican Original plant during his senior year. “I had turned 18, so I could be on the plant floor. I worked from four in the afternoon to nine o’clock at night during the week and an eight-hour shift on Saturdays,” he says. Low spent two months interning with industrial maintenance mechanics but discovered he was drawn to another area. He was interested in refrigeration and asked to switch so he could learn more about it. Low spent his internship assisting mechanics and technicians with their work. “I would watch while they were trouble shooting and always asked questions to find out what they did to eliminate variables and find the problem. It was good to see that critical thinking in action,” he says. Besides growing his technical skills and knowledge, Low says he learned a lot about how to work with other people. “My teacher stressed the importance of a professional attitude, so I had that mindset when I started. I treat people with courtesy, and I’ve found that if you treat others with respect, they will give you the same in return.” After graduating from high school, Low began working full-time at the plant as a maintenance mechanic and recently moved to a position as a refrigeration technician. He says Tyson helped him get the training he needed. It was an experience that helped him make new connections in the industry. “They sent me to school for specialized refrigeration training. I met other colleagues who work for Tyson that I wouldn’t have known otherwise.” Low’s goal is to keep moving up in his career. “I want to advance as far as I can and gain as many new experiences as possible,” he says. “Tyson and the people here have been really good to me and have encouraged me to keep moving forward in the company.” Low also has advice for others trying to find their calling. “Start as early as possible and find what you love. Then, push to always do better. You don’t have to be the best, just be better than the day before.” Tyson Foods is the second-largest protein producer in the world and offers dozens of different careers including transportation, information technology, research and development and nursing.
