Derek Miller built his career while learning on the job. He
originally wanted to be a radiology technician. “I applied for
a job in ER admissions and
changed my mind about what
I wanted to do because I really
like interacting with people,” he
explains. Miller first worked as an
admitting supervisor. He helped
admit patients to the hospital and calculated insurance coverage
and patient costs. Miller says it was a lot to learn at first. “I didn’t
know the insurance side of it and had to learn that. You have to
have math and computer skills to do that, and communicate well
with people. Like any job, you have to be willing to work hard and
learn new things.” Miller’s hard work has paid off. He recently
was promoted to system educator for patient access for all five
Northwest Health hospitals.
