A BETTER LIFE ! ISSUE 13 | Page 10

Effective Altruism With the growing capacity and wanting by many to give back, it is often easy to tick a box and give to the first causes in one’s line of sight. Effective Altruism (EA) implies that one needs to gather high- quality evidence and careful reasoning to work out how to help others as much as possible and in so doing decide which charities to donate to. EA’s purpose is to help you figure out how you can do the most good. It will help you think about which cause to focus on and how to use your money or your time to start making a difference, right away. If you don’t choose well, you risk wasting both. But if you choose wisely, you hopefully have a better chance to make a difference. Your potential however to make a difference isn’t just through mon- ey but through how you apply your time as well, in support of causes. The cause that you choose to work on is almost certainly going to be the biggest factor that determines how much good you can do. Many causes are already registered and mapped out for us; many of which also carry heavy administrative commitments before charitable spending actually occurs. How, then, can we figure out which cause we should focus on? The guiding factors lies in knowing Impact which has to do with the amount of lives affected and Traction, which has to do with the ability of contributions leading to the resources needed to address the problems to be resolved. Other metrics seek to consider the issue of Neglect, which has to do with contributing to real causes where few people are getting involved in resolving perhaps due to visibility. In general a good metric should also be Transparency where through declared accountability both time and money is accounted for and how the money is being spent is not a secret or subject to speculation. Just one example of an association which attempt to seek out the most effective causes to recommend is the GiveWell Foundation which focuses on rigorous evidence of how charitable money is spent. At the end of the day it is not just about giving for the sake of sat- isfying an emotional yearning but it is important to do your due diligence. Else you would be wasting your time and the wrong people may end up benefiting. But either way do your research and do continue to make a difference! Practice Generosity !
