Culture in a City's Music .."My Chosen Musical Journey"
I was just entering the capital city of Trinidad. My purpose was certain. The atmosphere however was ambivalent. In the library I discovered personality and culture had
a direct influence on the said atmosphere. I was excited! There was rhythm and cadence in my stature.
The music of Port of Spain had longed for my presence. The distinct attitude is always acquired, and, I
believe learned. The formative moments in life battle with the five senses. These are smells, tastes, hearing, sight, and touch. I lean towards the hearing in relation to music, but, the others are embedded inside
hearing so that all of us on earth can enjoy in music. Yes, it's music that describes modern culture; Folk,
Rock, Reggae, Pop, Classical, Calypso and World Music. It is far reaching and speaks to the senses of the
living on earth. There is always common familiarity
because the day presents music. The classic behaviour
and body language take pride and translate these mystical values. It is the purpose of music to edit culture.
Sway your hips, tap your feet. Let the beat of the city
resonate. The next time you visit Port of Spain in Trinidad let its music speak to your five common senses.
The culture performs and it is a great joy to the awakened traveller. It alerts our memory and reveals your
vitality. Tricia David
