A Beginners Guide to Privileging
The privileging process authorizes healthcare providers to perform specific scope of patient care services ( clinical privileges ) through a process of evaluation of credentials and competency by healthcare organizations . Providers are granted privileges based on their education and training , which would include completion of medical school , residency , or fellowship depending on their specialty , and their current clinical competency , which often includes documentation of case logs and or manufacturer designated training certification for special procedures . For example , an internal medicine provider would not be granted privileges to perform a surgical procedure , such as an appendectomy ( removal of the appendix ) or cholecystectomy ( removal of the gallbladder ) as their residency training does not include training in any of these types of surgical techniques or procedures .
Privileging Steps
Privileging involves four core steps
1 . The organization determines the scope of services and procedures it will offer and support , based on the process they must have in place , to determine if the following sufficient resources are available within a specified time frame to support each privilege :
1.1 Space
1.2 Equipment
