A Beginners Guide to Privileging
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses ( APRN ) were established in 1965 , with the goal of increasing the number of medical care providers , especially in underserved areas . Registered Nurses were trained in specific clinical care to perform routine testing , examinations and immunizations . This helped provide physicians more time to see patients , especially those in need of special attention from a physicians .
APRNs can also choose different subspecialties , such as the following :
• Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist ( CRNA )
• Certified Nurse Midwife ( CNM )
• Registered Nurse First Assistant ( RNFA )
• Nurse Practitioners ( NPs ) practice in the following population foci :
• Family / Lifespan
• Pediatrics
• Women ’ s Health / Gender-Related
• Adult Gerontology ( Acute Care and Primary )
• Neonatal
• Psychiatric / Mental Health
Other APPs that require privileges include Audiologists , Psychologists , Registered Radiologist Assistants ( RRAs ), and Certified Surgical First Assistants ( CSAs ).
