As a millennial, you can recall when the "grown folks" in the room reminisced
back on the good ole days to when kids appreciated certain aspects of childhood
versus their now in the form of our generation. We may have responded with
deep groans or major side eye but as history repeats itself we are right on
the curb of repeating the same tangent ourselves. Being a millwnnial means
your childhood was virtually impossible not to love, the best of both worlds
combining the old school foundation with the new era of technology. These
days it's hard to grasp when childhood ends rapidly as so much bombards Gen
Y and Z in an instant. With that said we wanted to take a moment to honor our
childhoods with the simple joys of watching TV and actually learning something
whether they have been small lessons or huge morals, media affected us all.
Here are some of the shows that were staples in your household without a doubt
and it's time we give credit where it's due.
A DIFFERENT WORLD
A spin-off stemming from the famous Cosby
Show, Different World shined a spotlight on
the college life our parents deemed as essential
to becoming well-rounded individuals. The
cast including the likes of Lisa Bonet, Jasmine
Guy, Kadeem Hardison, and Cree Summer
amongst many more. With all that talent
being held on the infamous Hillman College, a
HBCU inspo, there's no way you were tuned
in without catching episodes ranging from
responsibility, race, sex, and the results when
we as a community unite together for the
greater good. Debbie Allen set her sights on
what what happening to young adults me as
we all know history repeats itself making the
show still relevant to this day. One of the most
pivotal episodes, “The Cat’s in the Cradle”
(Season 5, Episode 14) which has gone down
in television history is when Dwayne and Ron
got arrested after a conflict with an opposing
schools students over a football rivalry turned
into how black people are viewed in America.
Another episode that doesn't get the mention
it deserves, “No Means No” (Season 2, Episode
20) touched on a topic that is such a hot button
today: date rape. This episode gave both male
and female perspectives about a sexual taboo
that made the audience uncomfortable but
created a conversation that is necessary in
order to provide a solution. The list is never-
ending but the underlying tone always echoed
the mindset of pre-adulting. We hope you
