STEP SHOW RULES
1. Each judge will use the following categories to judge each step team performance:
Appearance
Precision
Complexity/Difficulty
Creativity
Vocal Clarity
Showmanship/Enthusiasm
Transitions/Formations
2. Each team will have a total of 7 minutes to perform including setup behind stage and exiting the stage. Five
points will be deducted for each minute a team remains on the stage after the time limit. Two minutes over
time will result in disqualification.
3. A theme must be used in each performance. If a team does not have a theme for their show, there will be a 10
point deduction.
4. The total points accumulated on the score sheet will be the team score. The maximum score a step team can
score is 100 points. Points for the overall score can be deducted from for not adhering to the Step Show Rules.
5. Only active Undergraduate chapter members and active Graduate chapter members of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Inc., will be permitted to step.
6. Each Step Team must have all music cued on two CD’s. One person should be assigned to instruct the DJ
during the performance. This individual does not need to purchase a ticket as they are a part of the
performance team.
7. There are to be no liquids, flammable objects, food and/or anything else used as props for the performance
that causes damage to the stage.
8. All Step Teams must report to all scheduled meetings on-time in order to avoid 5 points being deducted from
the overall score.
9. If a Step Team member is found to be unsportsmanlike causing a disruption to the Step Show or the Step
Team, the chapter will be disqualified.
10. After a step team has registered, they will receive notification indicating they will be competing in the
show, further instructions, and a schedule to follow for the day of the show.
11. Deductions:
You will receive a 5 point deduction from your total score:
If your step team is not on time and present at the preliminary meeting the day of the show.
If a person is listed as a team member and they are inactive.
(Please note: All deductions are avoidable and have been set to ensure the highest caliber for the show.)
12. Your team will be automatically disqualified for making any derogatory remarks about any other team. This
includes, but is not limited to, hateful remarks about the other team, cursing, and/or sexual references. Any team
engaging in vulgar behavior will be escorted off the premises by security.
