prepared for the worst. His hands trembled as he picked up the tablet, and he began to sweat. He carefully typed the words,“ System, I want purpose.” And for a minute the world felt still. Finally, a response. This time a metallic voice boomed out of the tablet.“ You have asked for a request we cannot fulfill.” It took a long pause then said,“ Therefore, you will be transported to another society. Much like you, the people there were dissatisfied with our way of life. They now govern themselves, and they work jobs that give them purpose.”
Ray unclenched his sweating fists. After all that, he would live life the way it was meant to be lived, with freedom. Behind him, tires screeched to a halt as a car pulled up. A driver hopped out and opened the door, gesturing for him to get in.“ We’ ve already packed a suitcase,” he said.“ You have everything you need.” Ray wasn’ t going to argue.“ Thank you,” he said. And then the car drove away, and the sky melted from cloudless blue to evening orange. Ray was gone. ~ Gregory M.
