XXXIX An Original Final Chapter for Will’ s Race for Home by Coretta Scott King

We are one happy family now. Me, Father, Ma, Sarah, my kids and grandkids. Grandpa passed away some thirty years ago. It is 1939 now, exactly 50 years after our trek across the Red River. Sarah is the girl I briefly saw across the banks of the Red River on our journey home.
We are married now and have two kids, Mark and Joey. They are 34 and have kids of their own. Jonathan and Danny are two very enthusiastic youngsters, and they love my stories of venturing to Oklahoma from Texas. Though they try to understand, they will never really get the pain we faced back in Texas and on the way here.
It is a very hot evening, and while me and Mark are teaching young Danny to ride a horse, we hear a pained neigh, and I immediately know what is going on. We all rush to the stable, where all of our mules and horses live. We burst through the door, and see Midnight, the son of our old mule who played a big role in getting us to this promised land. We named him after Caesar’ s stallion. Midnight is lying on the floor of his stall, whinnying from the bright red wounds all over his body.
“ Bullet holes,” Father says, stooping down to examine Midnight’ s wounds.“ Is Midnight hurt?” Danny asks, holding on tightly to Mark’ s left sleeve.“ We don’ t know,” I reply.“ Prob’ ly some bandits,” Father says.“ Dirty crooks.”
