Participating in the renowned Ultra-marathon event,“ La DESERTICA,” in Spain on October 26, 2024, was a profound honour for Pte Ajaya Tamang and his team from the Gurkha AARC Support Battalion( GAARC Sp Bn). The team, led by Capt Louis Pfister and including Pte Ajaya Tamang, Pte Dipesh Deuja, Spr Himal Shrestha, and Spr Pema Tamang, embarked on this extraordinary journey with a shared sense of purpose and camaraderie.
The event was more than just a race; it was a testament to the power of resilience, teamwork, and personal growth. The team was driven by the desire to push beyond their limits, facing both physical and mental challenges head-on. A 10-day acclimatization period allowed them to adapt to the unique climate and terrain, while also immersing themselves in the local culture.
Hosted by the gracious Brigada Alfonso and the tercio“ Don Juan de Austria” of the Spanish Legion at Base Military Alvarez Sotomayor, the team quickly embraced the military traditions and routines of their hosts. An educational visit provided valuable insights into the history of the Spanish Legion, enriching their experience.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the Tabernas Desert in Andalusia, the DESERTICA Ultra Marathon is a gruelling 71 km race that attracts over 10,000 participants from around the world. On race day, the team was buoyed by the support of their 14 Sqn OC and the enthusiastic cheers of fellow participants and spectators. The event was impeccably organized, with well-managed facilities ensuring a smooth experience for all.
As they neared the finish line, the team’ s spirits were lifted by the crowd’ s encouragement. They completed the challenging course in 10 hours and 37 minutes, conquering an elevation gain of 2027 meters with a peak elevation of 1046 meters. The focus was not on their finishing time but on the shared experience and the joy of overcoming the terrain together.
The journey culminated in a memorable dinner hosted by the Spanish Legion, where the team had the opportunity to connect with members of the French“ Legion Etrangere” and the Spanish Legion. This cultural exchange enriched their understanding and fostered a sense of unity among the different military forces.
This remarkable experience not only pushed the team beyond their comfort zones but also instilled a deep sense of achievement. It enhanced their operational effectiveness and boosted the morale of the Army fighting force. The team extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Spanish Legion, the members of 1 Signal Brigade, and the Embassy staff in Madrid for their unwavering support.
For anyone considering a similar endeavour, the team highly recommends it. The journey is challenging, but the rewards are immeasurable.
