Ex DYNAMIC FRONT 25

Sig Divash Gurung
22nd Signal Regiment, 242 Gurkha Signal Squadron deployed on Ex DYNAMIC FRONT 25, Finland, from 15 October to 27 November 24. This brigade-sized exercise is an annual multinational training event aimed at improving interoperability among NATO allies and partner nations. It focused primarily on artillery coordination, communication systems and fire support, ensuring seamless cooperation and increased lethality in a real-world combat scenario with a capability that is a battle winner as much in contemporary conflict as it was over a hundred years ago.
Preparation for Ex DYNAMIC FRONT 25 began weeks in advance; from technical rehearsals to equipment inspections, every detail was meticulously planned. The deployment to Finland marked the beginning of a six-week journey filled with challenges and learning opportunities, the first being the weather. Finland’ s climate in late autumn is unforgiving and relentless, with temperatures well below zero and daylight hours reduced to a couple of hours, only adding to the complexity of the task.
242 Gurkha Signal Squadron played a crucial role in the exercise, showcasing trade expertise in delivering reliable and secure services to the staff officers from HQ ARRC and NATO allied nations. The team was required to demonstrate technical proficiency, troubleshoot real-time issues, and adapt to the dynamic nature of military operations in order to achieve mission success. Our responsibilities included deploying tactical communication systems, maintaining networks under simulated combat conditions, and ensuring interoperability with allied forces. The multinational nature of the exercise presented unique challenges, such as overcoming language barriers and integrating diverse communication technologies. However, these hurdles also fostered camaraderie and mutual respect among participants.

One of the most significant challenges was operating in Finland’ s rugged terrain and adverse weather conditions. Navigating through dense forests and icy roads required precision and teamwork. Equipment malfunctions and signal interference added to the complexity, but these obstacles only strengthened our problemsolving skills and perseverance. The exercise also provided valuable opportunities for professional growth. Working with NATO allies and partner nations broadened the understanding of different military cultures and operational methods. The experience underscored the importance of adaptability, effective communication, and collaboration in achieving mission success.
Participating in Ex DYNAMIC FRONT 25 was a transformative experience. It not only tested the technical and operational skills, but also reinforced teamwork and excellence. This Ex was more than just a military training event- it was a testament to the power of collaboration and resilience in the face of adversity. As a member of 22nd Signal Regiment, we are proud to have contributed to this endeavour and gained insights that will serve throughout our career. Finland’ s challenging environment, coupled with the dynamic nature of the exercise, created an unparalleled learning experience. It reaffirmed the critical role that communication and teamwork play in modern military operations and strengthened our ability to operate effectively within a multinational force.
