Why We Champion Student Research

RESEARCH
I t ’ s common practice for graduate students to conduct original research , but GMercyU has uniquely offered research opportunities to undergraduate students for years .
Why We Champion Student Research
BY MICHELLE KULP McELIECE , PhD ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR , BIOLOGY PROGRAM COORDINATOR
Part of the GMercyU mission is to prepare students for successful careers , including a focus on experiential learning . Student research , especially research conducted under the supervision of a faculty mentor , is a critical component of such learning .
Research engages students , connects them to their discipline and provides practical , hands-on experience in their field of study . Students often find their passion in the ability to ask their own questions , design their own strategies to do so and contribute new information to a body of knowledge .
Having honed their communication skills , laboratory techniques and knowledge of how to utilize sources to ask appropriate scientific questions and formulate sound conclusions , as well as the ability to design and present a scientific study in an appropriate and ethical manner , our graduates in the Biology program are well prepared to enter the workforce or graduate school .
FACULTY / STUDENT RESEARCH
Professors guide students and sometimes even coauthor published research with them . For example , Professor and Psychology Program Coordinator Rebecca Gullan , PhD , and several of her students coauthored a “ Mentors That Matter ” publication in 2016 . The mentorship measure they created is now used by others in the field .
