609 ( West Riding ) Squadron
Based at RAF Leeming the Squadron was originally formed to provide trained Force Protection Reservists at a time when the perceived threat from the Soviet Union was substantial . Today it continues in the role of providing personnel to support RAF Operations in the UK and around the world .
Mobilisation : Trained personnel have the opportunity to volunteer for full-time service to augment the Regular RAF in a number or ongoing security operations at RAF Leeming , other bases within the UK , and locations overseas . These opportunities see teams of personnel , or individuals , mobilised to serve alongside the Regular RAF for a specific task over a pre-determined period of time , such as providing security at the 2012 Olympic games and deploying with squadrons of aircraft to support the UKs NATO commitment .
Tasks can also include taking part in large exercises such as Red Flag in the USA , and forming part of short-term training teams to counterpart units in foreign militaries such as Albania and Nigeria .
