regulated. The ideal time to visit the port wine region is
autumn harvest when the age-old ritual of grape gathering
is followed. Centuries old songs and instruments often
accompany the all-night crushing of the grapes, still done
by foot in some places. Vintage port is not ready to drink
for at least 10 years, and some prefer port aged 20 years
or older.
Looking south from Lisbon more than 140 miles lies
the area encompassing the extreme easternmost part
of the European continent known as the Algarve. The
Algarve boasts over 100 miles of the best beaches in Eu-
rope. The combination of arid mild climate and beautiful
beaches has resulted in a huge tourism industry. Spectacu-
lar resorts and golf courses dot the region and draw many
vacationers from all over. The Algarve now rivals Spain's
Costa del Sol in popularity.
A visit to the Algarve brings us back to Portugal's Age
of Discovery. On the southernmost tip of the region sits
the city of Sagres, also called the "end of the world". It is
a rocky escarpment jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean.
It was from here that Henry the Navigator trained and
launched many explorers from his school of Navigation
and the rest of the world was revealed by their explora-
tions. From the narrow streets of Lisbon to the beaches of
the Algarve, Portugal exudes a charm not found anywhere
else in Europe. The next time you are planning a vacation
do take a look at this jewel of a destination—Portugal!
