I've always had a creative side
that ended up coming to a forfront at the end of my high schooling life.
I love designing, but I am not a fan of the theoretical/conceptual side of design. Instead, I prefer to let the creations flow and feel free and let them speak for themselves.
What does being a designer mean to you?
I feel as though design is a part of me. Without it, I would feel incomplete.
I see things in life that go unnoticed, and without design I feel as though I would lose that ability.
What do you feel are the troubles with being a student designer?
Time. The fact that you get so many assignments isn't the problem, but the lack of time that you have to evenly distribute to each really makes it difficult to concentrate and stay positive that you will be able to successfully complete them.
Do you have an ideology as a designer?
Never underappreciate type.
Do you feel you have enough or any avenues for exposure as a designer?
Being a student designer you have to be pretty self-exposive. Studios aren't going to come and find you, you have to display your work in avenues where possible clients and employees will see them, wether that's an online folio or even a facebook page.
Where do you see yourself in the long term, after graduating?
Hopefully working as part of a design studio somewhere in Melbourne.
Feeling immersed into the culture and lifestyle of design as it runs through the heart of the machine known as the city.
What keeps you going in terms of motivation?
Pride.
The sense of achievement and self-graditude. Looking at a piece of work and saying the words "Wow, I can't believe I made that" (Obviously in a good way).
What do you aim to achieve in your field of design?
I made a promise to myself and a friend in year 12 that one day I was going to become the best in the world at what I do.
Now I have realized that that statement is true, but what I do is be myself. I want to be the best "Mark Surtees" that the world has ever seen!
